Artistic wrought iron craftsmanship

There are places that no longer exist anywhere — it’s pointless to look for them in historic centers. But there are a few lucky exceptions, like the workshop of the “master blacksmiths” that you can still find in Gubbio, right in the heart of the historic center — almost like a “slow food” stronghold of wrought iron.

It’s not a tourist attraction: the blacksmiths’ activity is genuine. And if you’re lucky enough to find the shop open (they’re not always working, as the legendary craftsmen are getting older), you’ll get to experience an authentic workshop, darkened by time and rich with the scent of charcoal.

Located at Via Baldassini no. 22, this is the only remaining forge in Gubbio where iron is worked following traditional techniques — no molds, just the fire and the anvil, where every shape is forged by hand, ensuring the uniqueness of each piece. From beds to fireplace screens, from candelabras to chandeliers, railings, and street lamps — if you’re curious to see how a blacksmith truly works, this little workshop is worth a visit.
