Hermitages,
places of silence

There is a distinctive feature of this area that reflects its deeply spiritual nature and lends itself well to a form of tourism that values silence, contemplation, and mindfulness. In the Eugubine territory and its surroundings, there are several places worth visiting if you appreciate this kind of travel—one that embraces slow rhythms, tranquility, introspection, and spirituality.
Hermitage of Sant’Ambrogio in Gubbio
Founded around 1300, the Hermitage of Sant’Ambrogio is located along the Bottaccione Gorge and served as a place of retreat and prayer for Franciscan friars who sought a life of contemplation and devotion. Even today, the hermitage radiates an atmosphere of peace and serenity, with its simple stone structures blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The interior of the hermitage is not always open to visitors, so visits must be arranged in advance.
The site is managed by the order of the “Sisters of the Little Testament.”
