Sbandieratori

Gubbio, with its medieval towers, stone squares, and palaces, is the perfect stage for the Flag Throwers, artists who perform spectacular choreographies that bring to life a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Spectators, both locals and tourists, are always left in awe. The Flag Throwers of Gubbio have performed all over the world, always receiving thunderous applause. Watching them is like being transported back in time, when their presence announced major events or the arrival of prominent figures, using flags as visual communication and as a symbol of civic pride.
The Flag Throwers are a central part of many city celebrations: from the Festa dei Ceri to the Palio della Balestra, from the Torneo dei Quartieri to the Firefighter’s Befana, and also represent Gubbio at important events outside the region.
The flags rise and whirl in harmony with drums and clarions, in a triumph of color. Every move is precise, every throw calculated, in the beautiful dance of the Gubbio Flag Throwers.
As a testament to the vitality and ongoing evolution of this tradition—also closely connected to contemporary art—it’s worth noting that the current flags, inspired by the signs of the Tavole Eugubine alphabet, were designed by Oscar Piattella.
