You’ll find crescia everywhere—stuffed with cold cuts, vegetables, and cheeses. Then there’s friccò, a delicious main dish made with chicken, lamb, and rabbit. Brustengo, a fried dough, often accompanies appetizers. Don’t miss the chickling pea soups and other legume-based dishes.
Depending on the time of year, there are traditional sweets worth trying: la vecchia (a shortcrust tart with jam) during mid-Lent, and castagnole (fried dough balls) at Carnival time. The Baccalà alla ceraiola is a typical dish served during the Festa dei Ceri.

In the upper part of the town, you’ll find the Carabinieri station (Palazzo Pretorio, which in reality is the Town Hall) and Piazza Grande, home to the bar where the famous chess games between Don Matteo and Marshal Cecchini took place.
In Piazza San Giovanni, you’ll find the church of the same name, which served as the exterior in the series, while the interior scenes were filmed in the Church of San Marziale, located at the end of Via XX Settembre.
In the end, nearly every corner of the historic center served as a backdrop for the adventures of the detective priest—see how many you can recognize!

At our office in Via della Repubblica, 15 you can get information about accommodation facilities along the route and also pick up a detailed map of the Gubbio–Valfabbrica–Assisi trail. This is the very path that Saint Francis took when he left Assisi after renouncing his father’s wealth, and it has been faithfully reconstructed through a careful study of Franciscan sources.
If you plan your trip in advance, by sending an email to turismo@comune.gubbio.pg.it you can receive a list of places to stay and a printed copy of the trail map. We also recommend visiting the websites www.caigubbio.it and www.ilsentierodifrancesco.it

Beautiful nature walks. There’s a playground-equipped park near the Roman Theatre and another one at the Vittorina area. The cable car ride to the top of the mountain is a favorite among both adults and children.
The permanent exhibition Extinction offers an exciting journey into the world of dinosaur extinction, featuring life-size models, authentic fossils, and multimedia installations that make complex scientific topics easy and fun to understand. The museum also organizes fun workshops on weekends and holidays.
Additionally, from October to May, the Sperelliana Library hosts creative workshops for children every Saturday afternoon, including art, games, theater, and storytelling activities.

There are many trails marked by the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) in the immediate surroundings of Gubbio (www.caigubbio.it). You can choose to leisurely walk along the “stradoni” where the Ceri are raced on May 15th; starting from the Cathedral, the path climbs up to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo, offering a stunning view over the rooftops of the city.
From the Bottaccione Gorge, just outside the historic center, you can access the trail that runs above the ancient medieval aqueduct—a relatively easy route, provided you’re not afraid of heights.
Gubbio is also very close (about 15 km) to the Monte Cucco Regional Park, where you can find both easy trails and more challenging routes for experienced hikers. Don’t miss the descent into the cave—an unforgettable, heart-pounding adventure.

The ancient has never betrayed us, and for us, life is what the stone city has proclaimed for centuries—unchanging—as it rises from the plain up to Gubbio: houses leaning against one another, like people holding each other by the arm, moving forward together. Together, they embody the past, together, they await the future.
