The Hidden Muse – Animae Antiquae

The Hidden Muse – Animae Antiquae

Among the secluded shadows of the cloister of the Abbey of San Secondo, Animae Antiquae comes to life, a new musical festival dedicated to ancient music, understood as a place of memory, spirituality, and intense artistic expression.
Organized by the XI Canto Association, the festival was created with the aim of offering the public not only a valuable aesthetic experience, but also an opportunity for deep immersion in the sounds and atmospheres of past eras, through a journey that spans a broad time span, from the Renaissance to the first half of the 19th century.
The absolute protagonist is music performed on original or historically reconstructed instruments, with careful philological practices and a repertoire that ranges from the sacred to the profane, including famous compositions and lesser-known or recently rediscovered works. In this vision, the festival aims to be a space for appreciation and conscious listening, where even silence and the environment become part of the musical language.
This first event welcomes prestigious performers active on the national and international scene, profoundly knowledgeable about historical performance practices, and capable of offering audiences an authentic, vibrant, and rigorous vision of the ancient repertoire.
It is a journey in search of a hidden yet vibrant musical femininity, through the works of 17th-century female composers, often overshadowed by the dominant tradition. It is a precious opportunity to restore voice and light to a musical heritage too long forgotten.
The Abbey of San Secondo, with its cloisters steeped in spirituality, proves to be the ideal setting for a project that also aims to be a tribute to the evocative power of ancient sound, to contemplation, and to the dialogue between different eras and
sensibilities.
Animae Antiquae is an invitation to listening and quiet, but also a gesture of gratitude towards those spiritual places that still know how to welcome, preserve, and make beauty resonate. (source, organization)
