Stone

Did you know that Gubbio is also known as the “City of Stone”? Everything here reflects a deep and indissoluble bond with stone. A great tradition of craftsmen and artists, stonemasons and builders is visible in every corner and view of the city and continues to this day. The “Università dei Muratori”, still active today and dating back to the Medieval Guilds, plays a key role in organizing the Festa dei Ceri.

In addition to the open-air “museum”, visible in the grand palaces and city streets, in 2021 the “Giuseppe Calzuola Museum of Stone” was inaugurated. Located in the historic premises of the Mulino dell’Abbondanza, it displays stone works by the Eugubine craftsman, explanatory videos, and a section dedicated to workshops, strongly desired by the Università dei Muratori to pass on the ancient knowledge of stone working.

The museum is located at Via del Camignano 3 and is open on weekends from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00.

Fun fact: in Largo del Bargello you can see the “Fontana del Ceraiolo”, a stone fountain created by Calzuola and donated to the city of Gubbio in 1994.
