festivals, theatre, sports

The city’s most important cultural, musical, and theatrical events, along with major sporting occasions. Because Gubbio is medieval—but not only that… it’s a vibrant city, rich in contemporary culture and fully engaged with the present.

Festival del Medioevo

The Festival of the Middle Ages takes place during the last week of September under the artistic direction of journalist Federico Fioravanti, and is organized by the Cultural Association Festival del Medioevo. Scholars, enthusiasts, and curious visitors from all over the world gather in Gubbio to attend captivating history lectures and rediscover a millennium often dismissed too lightly. This historical period continues to attract a growing audience, offering invaluable insights into our present day.

Exhibitions, performances, reenactments, conferences, lectures, markets, speakers, educators, and internationally renowned artists—along with an engaged and enthusiastic audience—make the Festival of the Middle Ages a must-see event in Gubbio since 2015.

Summer season at the Teatro Romano

For over sixty years, the Eugubine summer has brought together theatre, music, and archaeology in the name of beauty, thanks to the summer season hosted in the amphitheatre of the Roman Theatre. The program is always rich and diverse, appealing to a wide range of audiences. Classical plays alternate with concerts from local and regional festivals, alongside performances by local theatre companies, orchestras, opera recitals, and much more.

The Roman Theatre has also been home for several years to the Pocket Opera Association project, supporting and promoting opera.

Music and great art… under the stars.

Gubbio DOC Fest

The Gubbio D.O.C. Fest, promoted by the Associazione Insieme, was founded in 2014. Entirely conceived and managed — including its artistic direction — by young volunteers, the festival aims to promote musical, cultural, and food-and-wine events that highlight the beauty of the city and its surroundings.
The festival is known for its major events in Piazza Grande during the month of August and has hosted over the years notable figures from the worlds of music, culture, and storytelling: Afterhours, Negrita, Carl Brave, Achille Lauro, Vittorio Sgarbi, Andrea Scanzi, Antonella Ruggiero, Mogol, Mario Biondi, Noemi, Francesco De Gregori, and many others.
What truly sets the Gubbio D.O.C. Fest apart is its strong social mission: the project channels the enthusiasm and talent of young people to serve the city, creating opportunities for personal growth and education for those involved, while enriching Gubbio’s cultural offerings during the summer season.

Gubbio No Borders Festival

The Gubbio No Borders Festival was founded in August 2002 and is the longest-running festival in the city. From its earliest editions, it stood out for the quality of its programming and has gradually secured a prominent place among Italy’s summer jazz festivals. Many of the greatest names in Italian jazz have performed here. Over the years, the festival has successfully blended jazz with high-quality singer-songwriter music, cinema, satirical theatre, literature, journalism, photography, and philosophy, creating a multidisciplinary cultural event of the highest level. The festival is also known for its masterclasses, which attract a large audience and feature prestigious musicians and professionals from the jazz world.

Oltre Festival

Oltre Festival is a music festival that goes beyond genres, combining concerts with popular classical music masterclasses. The aim is to enliven Gubbio’s summer by bringing together musicians and artistic experiences of various kinds.
The festival mainly takes place at the Cloister of San Pietro and the Roman Theatre, offering performances by artists with unique backgrounds—from singer-songwriters to pop, jazz, and world music.
As envisioned by the artistic direction, Oltre Festival is a space where music meets other music—encouraging a fusion of initiatives and sounds that echo cultures from around the globe.
The festival is held primarily during the month of July.

Festival Umbria in Voce

Founded in 2015, this festival is entirely dedicated to the voice and to the places where the voice resonates, creating communication and connection. It combines educational experiences, concerts, and performances, and has grown over time to include oral poetry, theatre, reading aloud, creative writing, and storytelling.
It offers a wide range of workshops and activities: singing laboratories covering various musical genres, circle songs, body music, art therapy, concerts, site-specific events, and immersive experiences set in the city of Gubbio and nearby areas such as Gualdo Tadino, Valfabbrica, and Scheggia e Pascelupo.
The festival’s program follows a different theme each year and extends across a long period—from June to September—with events taking place throughout the season

Wonderlast Music Festival

The Wonderlast Music Festival is a hybrid music event that blends diverse musical genres and attracts thousands of young people from all over Italy. Inspired by major Northern European festivals, the WMF offers a unique musical experience.
It takes place in the “Gubbio Events Arena”, a spacious 2,000 m² dance floor surrounded by a large lawn, totaling 6,000 m² of event space. Music, interactive activities, dancing, and guaranteed fun all come together in this vibrant summer celebration.

Spartan Race

For the past few years, Gubbio has hosted the world’s most famous obstacle race in April: the Gubbio Spartan Trifecta Weekend.
Between wooden bridges, walls, ropes, stones, water, mud, barbed wire, fire, and heavy objects placed along the route to make the race tougher—yet more exciting—the city comes alive to welcome a huge number of participants and fans from all over the world.
