Palio
della Balestra

Information & Tickets

This event takes place on the last Sunday of May and features the crossbowmen of Gubbio competing against those of Sansepolcro in a contest that reenacts medieval challenges. The thrilling competition is held in Piazza Grande, with the magnificent Palazzo dei Consoli providing a stunning backdrop. The event not only celebrates the ancient rivalry but also the deep friendship between Gubbio and the town of Sansepolcro. Both cities boast a long history of archers and crossbowmen, who compete in a test of skill and precision using the ancient stationary medieval crossbow.
The crossbowmen wear historical costumes that reflect typical medieval attire, adding visual and historical charm to the event. Before the competition begins, a captivating historical parade winds through the city streets, allowing citizens and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past. During the event in Piazza Grande, spectators can also enjoy a spectacular performance by Gubbio’s Flag Throwers, world-renowned masters of this traditional art.
The contest involves hitting a target placed at a distance of approximately 36 meters. The winner is awarded the Palio, a banner created each year by different artists—a great honor for the winning city.
The event is also a symbol of peace and friendship between Gubbio and Sansepolcro, demonstrating how an ancient rivalry can become a shared celebration of mutual respect. Year after year, the Palio della Balestra remains a highly anticipated occasion, a bridge between past and present that honors history, art, and community spirit.
